Was the protestant reformation good for society?

Personal answer, I would say no! The Catholic church had it problems but they had developed a system of healthcare that wasn’t going to be seen again until the modern creation of the NHS ( though medieval hospitals are hardly up to modern standards). It makes me wonder what would have happened if these institutions had been left alone. Instead we got Bedlam where people came to see and gape at the mentally ill as though going to the zoo.
Martin Luther in one reference advocated the killing of a disabled child though people make the excuse that this was only one reference there is nothing to say he didn’t believe that this should be done to all severely disabled children.
I’m not a Christian but when Christendom fell apart than up came the rise of eugenics, which in a way is still being practiced through the use of abortion all to take away burdens of the state or the misguided notion to make the perfect human being’s or the perfect society it sometimes makes me want to withdraw from society altogether.
Perhaps I’ve simplified things too much, although healthcare is important, not at the expense hurting others.
