Ancient Egypt and blindness
Blindness was a problem in ancient Egypt especially in the pyramid age, sandstorms, raging heat and the dust from stone and buildings. With such interesting cures as mashing a tortoise’s brain placing it on your eye and performing this spell.
They also used powdered liver rich in vitamin A to cure night blindness though im not sure if the tortise brains worked.
The spell,
There is a shouting in the southern sky in darkness, There is an uproar in the northern sky, The Hall of Pillars falls into the waters. The crew of the sun god bent their oars so that the heads at his side fall into the water, Who leads hither what he finds? I lead forth what I find. I lead forth your heads. I lift up your necks. I fasten what has been cut from you in its place. I lead you forth to drive away the god of Fevers and all possible deadly arts.
Hence the need for eyeliner and a lot of makeup around the eye in the belief that they would keep away insects and eye infections.
Horus, The blind god
The name Horus comes from the Egyptian word Hor, which translates as 'face'. We find him worshipped as Mekhenti-irry which translates as 'He who has on his brow Two Eyes', the sun and moon representing his eyes. On nights when there is no moon we find him worshipped as Mekhenti-en-irty, 'He who on his brow has no eyes', in this form he was considered the god of the blind.
In common tradition he is the son of Osiris and Isis, losing an eye in the battle with Set his uncle in order to avenge his father’s death and claim the throne of Egypt.
The eye of Horus was also used as a medallion was kept as a protection symbol.
